Language Arts is a core subject in YYPS. We strive to combine a language-rich environment with a modern student-centred approach to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our students so they can build, develop and extend their language skills.

We pride ourselves on our school-based curriculum which has elements of the HK, UK, and US curricula, all carefully designed around the needs, interests and abilities of our students taking into account our context, strengths and growth opportunities. By the time our students move onto secondary school they are independent readers, well-versed speakers, confident writers of an array of text types and most importantly critical thinkers.

In our lessons we cast a wide net of teaching and learning goals to cover all 4 strands of English language, namely speaking, listening, reading and writing. We also focus on developing both students’ core skills like collaboration, creativity, critical thinking etc as well as their higher order thinking skills.

A unique characteristic of our language Arts lessons is the utilisation of co-teaching which allows us to be very efficient with our efforts to deliver the best teaching practices to our students. We can also support them much better whether it is helping our students catch up with learning or pushing them to stretch their abilities and achieve a higher standard.

Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to explore a wide variety of Chinese literary works. From picture books to classic poetry, simple texts to classical literature, our students are immersed into the poetic charm of Chinese whilst cultivating their literacy and appreciation for Chinese culture. “Read wide, and you will write wisely.” As students find enjoyment in reading, our structured learning process facilitates our students in learning the skills to translate the intricacies of the language into their writing.

Speaking and Listening are also important components in our Chinese curriculum. With Putonghua as our medium of instruction for Chinese and Multi-intelligence and Moral Education lessons, students have ample opportunities to work and communicate in Putonghua on a daily basis. Our learning environment rich in Putonghua further strengthens our students’ foundations in Chinese.

Our school  implemented one weekly lesson of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the academic year of 2019/20.  During this year, our school has established 5 school teams to unleash students’ potential in innovation, such as Tello Drone, App Inventor, mBot, Coding and Programming Team, and our school has been awarded in different aspects in STEM education with 5 champions, 1 first runner up, 4 second runners up, and more.

We are offering a double lesson each week for ICT & STEM education starting from the 2020/2021 academic year .  Our school-based ICT & STEM education not only covers the study on knowledge skills, but also focuses on students’ generic skills as well as value and attitude, especially metacognition and digital citizenship.  Our school-based curriculum includes, but is not limited to, 3D Printing, mBot, micro:bit Coding, Web Page design and App Inventor.

Learning activities are designed for students to explore ICT & STEM related concepts with modern teaching strategies, such as hands-on activities, inquiry-based learning, dynamic teaching strategies and cooperative learning. In addition, besides the 3/F computer room and a wide variety of teaching and learning resources, our school has also invested substantial resources into constructing a STEM Laboratory on the 2/F to enrich students’ learning experience and build a sense of belonging. For the formative assessment, project-based learning will  take place instead of traditional quizzes and homework.

Most importantly, our ultimate goal is not only to equip students with up-to-date 21st century skills, but also arouse their learning motivation, as well as increase the teaching and learning efficiency in all disciplines through our ICT & STEM curriculum.

In YYPS, we understand that music education is indispensable when it comes to cultivating all-rounded students. Beyond training in music performance and theory, students develop holistically as they learn to listen and coordinate with their peers to achieve synchronization in pitch, rhythm and pulse. With consistent experiences of music-making, students develop awareness for space and time. Students gain the necessary confidence and creativity to move their bodies at will. Students immersed in a rich music program will acquire independence, discipline, social skills, kinesthetic dexterity as well as enhanced cognitive abilities.

In conjunction with our curriculum, our music program also provides extracurricular activities for our students, including Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Musical Theater Team, Vocal and Instrumental Training Classes etc. We strive to develop a well-rounded music program to maximize the potential growth of our students.
